Practicing Together

〰️

Practicing Together 〰️

No one is turned away for lack of funds. We REALLY want you to take advantage of our programs!

From Sosan, our Guiding Teacher:

Some people have told us that they don't attend as many classes as they'd like because they can't afford to pay the full asking price (the price we say covers teacher payments and Clouds admin/staffing). If you are such a person, please know this: your attendance at any of our programs is a huge benefit in and of itself.  All the teachers give the dharma freely. It doesn't save Clouds any money in admin and staffing if you don't attend. If you decide not to attend, then we lose your valuable input, and your fellow Sangha members lose the opportunity to practice with you. Attitudes like "I don't deserve to attend if I can't pay full price" come from a mindset of separation and scarcity.  This is not the Buddha Way.

So, what is the Buddha Way with regard to giving? Giving and receiving have to do with realizing that we are not separate. That we cannot exist on our own.

Thank you for the generous gift of your presence and supporting our practice with your own!

Zen Dance, Zen Flow

Fun and Zen, mindfulness and movement, embodied joy to expand our worldview to change the world. Don’t You Feel It Too? uses creative movement to release stuck energy and to make a collective space of wild flow. Every session offers a different experience of this ongoing practice, an exploration hosted at Clouds in Water for more than six years. Behavioral artist Marcus Young 楊墨 guides you in these 10-words of basic instruction: 1. Listen with love  2. Move honestly (fearlessly)  3. Feel what you feel. If you are hesitant about movement, please know the practice is inclusive of any ability and movement from stillness and breathing to small movements to free-flow dance. Everyone is welcome.

Marcus Young 楊墨 makes behavioral art. Founder of Don’t You Feel It Too? – a 15-year public movement practice for healing and liberation – he also created St. Paul’s sidewalk poetry project, is Stage Director for Ananya Dance Theatre, and teaches “Art & Life” at the University of Minnesota and Creative Leadership at MCAD. Marcus is a member of the Race, Love and Liberation LAB at Clouds in Water.

Come to one or more sessions!

April 30 - June 25

Qi Gong
Tues, April 30th - June 25th,
9 am - 10 am
Lead by JiRin Ann Schulman

Qi Gong

Qigong means "cultivating energy,"  and that's what we'll be doing in this nourishing morning class! We'll be cultivating energy (especially mētta, or, lovingkindness) and also include mind/body/balance work. All bodies are welcome for this unique form of body mindfulness.

In this class we will work on things like balance, stances, shifting weight, and turning the waist.  We will break down postures that we do during the qigong movement ( ie: Clouds Hands, Silk Flowing on the Breeze, etc.) into interrelated components towards unifying the hands and feet and whole body.  We may do some Tai Qi postures that require stepping, or standing on one leg, in order to gain and improve both softness and balance.

If you have questions about whether this class is right for you, please email us at  info@cloudsinwater.org.

May Sesshin May 10 - 11,
Friday 7 - 9 pm,
Saturday, 8:30 am - 9 pm
With Sosan Theresa Flynn
In Person Only

May Sesshin

Sesshin, which means “collecting the heart/mind”, provides a rare chance to step into a sanctuary of stillness, to close the door for a little while on the cacophony, and to appreciate the freedom and spaciousness of life in the present. Whether you are a beginner or experienced practitioner, we hope you will consider joining this wonderful practice.

A typical sesshin includes multiple periods of sitting and walking meditation, one or more dharma talks, traditional oryoki meals, zen chanting liturgy, temple care (mindful cleaning), body practice, rest breaks, and the opportunity to meet one-on-one with the teacher. We refrain from unnecessary speech and settle into silence.

While some instruction is given during the sesshin, if you are a first-timer, we recommend that you first attend an introduction to meditation and Zen Buddhism sesshin, and reach out to one of our teachers before registering.

Listening to our Bodies: a racial equity workshop for white-bodied Buddist practitioners
June 22nd
Saturday at 2 - 5 pm (potluck dinner 5 - 6 pm)
With Or Laura Levinson
In Person Only

Listening to our Bodies: a racial equity workshop for white-bodied Buddist practitioners.

In this workshop, skilled facilitator Laura Levinson will guide us through a deep exploration of the ways colonialism and white supremacy have impacted our bodies at the cellular level, and feel how they continue to show up in our actions and relationships. We will practice centering and grounding in our own bodies, verbal and nonverbal listening, and understanding some of the ways racism shows up in the room.

Sosan Flynn will assist by bringing in core Zen practices that relate to this work, including: how to stay with difficult emotions during meditation so that they may be transformed rather than repressed, how bowing practice and the chant of formless atonement can help us connect to our bodies, and how taking refuge in the three treasures supports this work.

This workshop will be a deepening practice of building awareness of whiteness/white supremacy in the body, in relationship and in the wider community. It's orientated towards those already on this journey; however, you are welcome to join in you are newer with the understanding that the structure will not be geared towards beginners.

Laura Levinson (they/them), who also goes by Or אור, is a performing artist, arts organizer, and healer who feels most at home in motion. They call on the magic of queer Jewish diaspora to remind us that love in transit still has its roots in the earth. We belong to the land - ani l'dodi v'dodi li. Or has been creating performance and facilitating workshops for the past eight years focused on de-assimilation, solidarity, and abrading whiteness. They taught the Repatterning Whiteness class at Clouds last fall, and have partnered with Clouds on various projects over the past several years. Other past workshops have included "Gut, Bones, Ground," which brings together deep body awareness, bone- and land-stories, and herbal wisdom; and “Swimming Home,” co-created with Leila Awadallah and following the threads of diaspora, ancestry, body-as-homeland, and river water as divine anticolonial/borderless guide.

Yoga with Felicia

Yoga means unity, the unity of individual consciousness with high consciousness.  It is meditation in motion.  In this way, we connect to the body/mind in practice for the benefit of all beings.  Our intentions guide the benefits we receive from yoga.  Yoga can be a physical activity that promotes health, flexibility, strength, and endurance.  But with mindful intention, yoga becomes a path to enlightenment.  We can use yoga to deepen practice and tend the body/mind, which can seem daunting at first, but when we come together in a community, what appears challenging to do alone is now within reach. In this 8-week, 75-minute course, we come together to find a sense of belonging, supportive practice, and connection to the body/mind.  We will practice hatha yoga, breath work, and guided meditation with time for reflection and sharing.  This class is about exploration, discovery, and play.  No previous experience is required.  All are welcome.

Dr. Felicia Washington Sy (she/her) is honored to be of service as a board member at Clouds. She is a licensed independent clinical social worker and a practicing Buddhist for 15 years. As a licensed psychotherapist, she combines mindfulness-based social work practice and intercultural theory to train practitioners to work with diverse populations across the Twin Cities Metropolitan area. At Clouds, as part of a team, she also helps co-facilitates the BIPOC sitting group. Felicia has been a registered yoga teacher since 2007.
